RNAV Route is a route established for the use of aircraft that can use the area navigation.
Area Navigation is a method which permits aircraft operation on any desired flight path within the coverage of station-referenced navigation aids or within the limits of the capability of self-contained aids, or a combination of these
RNAV-5 is the navigation specification applied to all RNAV routes within the airspace of the Amazônica, Brasília, Curitiba and Recife FIR.

1.1. In the Amazônica, Brasília, Curitiba and Recife FIR, except as stated in 3.3.4.2, only aircraft approved for RNAV-5 operations (airworthiness and operations approval) will be able to file flight plans for routes designated as RNAV-5, in accordance with process established by State of the Operator or State of Registry, as the case may be. The approval process for Brazilian aircraft and operators is established by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).

1.2. State aircraft, aircraft conducting SAR missions, humanitarian and maintenance or first delivery flights do not require RNAV-5 authorization to fly on RNAV routes.
|
1.3. Aircraft operating on RNAV-5 routes will be equipped with at least on-board RNAV equipment that meets an en-route
lateral and longitudinal navigation precision of ± 5 NM (± 9.26 KM) 95% of the total flight time.
|
1.4. Before starting an operation on an RNAV-5 route, the proper operation of the on-board RNAV system will be verified, among others aspects established on the operational approval process, including:
a) Review of records and forms to ensure that possible maintenance actions have been taken to fix equipments
defects;
b) Checking the validity of the database (current AIRAC cycle), if available on the aircraft.
c) Verification of the authorized flight plan by comparing the applicable charts or other resources with the text displayed on the navigation system screen or with the graphical displays on the aircraft display, if available.
The exclusion of specific navigation aid should be confirmed, if applicable.

1.5. When operating on an RNAV-5 route, the proper
operation of the on-board RNAV system will be verified,
among others aspects established on the operational
approval process, including confirmation:
a) That the equipment required for RNAV-5 operation has
not been degraded during the flight;
b) That the route is consistent with the ATC authorization;
c) Through crosschecks, that the aircraft navigation
precision is appropriate for RNAV-5 operation;
d) That other navigation aids are selected to enable
crosscheck or immediate reversal in case of loss of RNAV
capability.

1.6. If the ATC assigns radar vectors that take the aircraft off
the RNAV route, the pilot shall not modify the flight plan in the RNAV system until cleared to go back to the route or until the ATC confirms a new authorization. While the aircraft is not on the designated RNAV-5 route, the specified precision requirement does not apply

1.7.1. The status of operator and aircraft approval relating to
navigation specification RNAV-5 must be indicated on the
Filed Flight Plan (FPL), by inserting the letter “R” in item 10 of the Flight Plan form.

1.7.2. For the specific case of the Repetitive Flight Plan
(RPL), the above mentioned approval must be indicated by
inserting the letter “R” in item “Q” of the RPL, as follows:
EQPT/R.

1.7.3. For flights coming from and destined to national AD,
the approval status of PBN must be detailed in ITEM 18 of
the FPL or in item “Q” of the RPL, by inserting the following
alphanumeric codes, preceded by the PBN/ designator:

1.7.4. For flights coming from and/or destined to foreign
airdromes, the approval status of PBN must be detailed on
ITEM 18 of the FPL by inserting the aphanumeric codes
mentioned on ITEM 2.7.3, preceded by the NAV/ designator.

1.7.5. In cases where the aircraft and the operator are
approved for RNAV-5 operations and a failure or degradation of the navigation system is detected prior to the departure of the aircraft that prevents it from meeting the required functionality and accuracy requirements, the operator shall not include the letter R in item 10 of the flight plan. For an RPL-based operation, it must be canceled and an appropriate FPL must be presented to the failure or
degradation conditions.

1.7.6. State aircraft, aircraft conducting SAR missions,
humanitarian, and maintenance or first delivery flights that do not have RNAV- 5 approval can file flight plans for operations on RNAV routes, provided these aircraft have conditions to navigate on RNAV routes. These aircraft must complete box 18 by inserting the following information:
a) RMK/NONRNAV5.
b) STS/ STATE, HUM, SAR, MAINT or DELIVERY,
indicating the reason for the special treatment.

1.8 Contingency Procedures
|
1.8.1. Regarding the in-flight degradation or failure of the
RNAV system when the aircraft is on an ATS route
designated as RNAV-5, the following procedures must be
followed:
a) The aircraft will be authorized to fly on the
“conventional” ATS routes defined by VOR/DME and/or
NDB; or
b) If these “conventional” routes are not available, the
aircraft will be authorized to fly with conventional
navigation aids, that is, VOR/DME or NDB; or
c) When the aforementioned procedures a) and b) are not
available, the ATC unit will provide the aircraft, whenever
possible, with radar vectoring until the aircraft can resume
its own navigation.

1.8.2. The application of ATC measures with respect to an
aircraft that cannot meet RNAV requirements due to failure or degradation of the RNAV system will depend on the
information provided by the pilot that the aircraft is not able to comply with RNAV-5 requirements and on the general air traffic conditions.

1.10. The RNAV Route in the Brazilian air space are divided in
two class: The lower space RNAV and the upper air space
RNAV.
The lower space RNAV routes are designed by LXXX, MXXX, NXXX if they are international routes, and by ZXX if they are national routes.
The upper space RNAV routes are designed by ULXXX,
UMXXX, UNXXX if they are international routes, and by
UZXX if they are national routes.
